Step # 1: Check the Rules Where You Live
Rules for sheds vary by town. Check your local permit office before you build.
Step # 2: Know the Type & Size of Your Shed
The type and size of the shed depend on one main thing: the Purpose this shed will serve. For starters, there are 3 basic types of sheds to choose from, differing mainly in the type of roof
-
Lean-to Shed: As the name suggests, lean-to sheds are constructed against an already erected wall and have a roof sliding down at a subtle angle from one end only. These are smaller in size and best suited for mainly storage purposes.
-
Gable Shed: A Gable shed is a more refined and useful shed and can be used for purposes other than storage. It can be converted into a garage or an outhouse depending on its size. The gable roof is the most common roof type and suits regions with cold climate.
-
Hip-roof Shed: The hip-roof shed is a more complex yet elegant shed with a roof that has inclination on all 4 sides and the roof somewhat looks like a pyramid. This is suited for larger size of sheds.
Step # 3: Shed Dimensions & Measurements
Once you know the size and type of your shed, it is important to know the accurate dimensions and measurements of all sides. For a typical 12×10 gable shed, the maximum height of the shed will be 11 feet and 8 ½ inches. The width of the shed will be 12 feet and 2 ¼ inches and the side walls will be 10 feet and 1 inch wide. A door and window will also be added to the shed.
Step # 4: Get the Supplies & Tools
Once you know the dimensions, you know how much material you need. You will need ¾ inch thick plywood, pressure treated timber for skids, wall studs, roof studs, cripple studs, rafters or pre manufactured trusses, shingles, fascia boards and a door and window to be bought separately. You will need different types of saws, a hammer, galvanized nails, L-joints etc to shape and fit the shed pieces together.
Step # 5: Building the Foundation and Floor
The first step of construction is making the foundation of the shed. Start by placing pressure treated timber on the floor with equal spaces to form the skids. Hammer joists and bands over it to form the skid framework. Once the skid framework is ready, line it with ¾ inch tongue and groove plywood to make the flooring.
REMEMBER to make the foundation exactly where you intend to build the shed otherwise moving the foundation around can be a big hassle and also can damage the foundation. Also make the foundation on an even surface without any vegetation or loose soil beneath.
Step # 6: Erecting the Walls
Once the foundation is done, make the structure of all 4 walls independently.
-
Start with the top and bottom plates then line it with wall studs along the length. The walls will be 7 feet and 6 inches in height.
-
The front wall will also accommodate the door. Once you have lined the walls studs, make a cut for the door and fasten the structure using header plate and cripple studs.
-
Similarly, the side wall will have a 3×3 window. Make the cut and fasten the structure in the same way. The width from top and bottom of the side walls will differ to accommodate the roof.
-
Once the structure of all 4 walls is ready, install T1-11 siding from the exterior to give your walls a finished exterior.
-
Nail the walls on the foundation using temporary brackets. Use galvanized nails and L-joint to fix the walls on the foundation.
Step # 7: Build the Gable Roof Framework
A gable roof framework is made by fixing trusses over the wall studs.
-
Make trusses using rafters, gussets and cross pieces.
-
You can assemble trusses on the floor. All your trusses must be identical.
-
Once all the trusses are assembled, fix them using galvanized nails on the wall studs across the roof.
-
Your roof will span at a width of 13 feet and 6 ½ inches.
Step # 8: Cover the Roof with Plywood & Shingles
-
Nail ¾ inch thick plywood horizontally across the trusses to cover your roof.
-
Once your roof is completely covered, you may further add shingles to make your roof leakage proof.
-
Refer to the manual with shingles on how to install them.
-
While there are many types of shingles available, we recommend asphalt shingles as they are durable and friendly on the pocket.
Step # 9: Install the Fascia Boards, Trims & Soffits
To give your shed an overall finessed look, install the fascia boards on the walls to make the leakage proof and add trims at the edges of window, door and the wall edges. Also add soffits along the trims. These give your shed a more finished looked and also make it leakage proof and protects from moss and other insect attacks.
Step # 10: Adding Some Finishing Touches
-
Lastly, install the door and window to your shed following the manufacturer’s manual.
-
You may additionally coat it with lacquer on the outside or paint it as per your liking. Lacquer coat or paint gives your shed a good look whilst protecting the exterior.
-
You may also choose to insulate your shed if you plan to use electrical equipment inside the shed. The shed can be divided into portions using cardboard planks.
