Step # 1: Inquire about the Related Permits:
First and the foremost, you need to find out if you require any legal permits in order to build a shed on your property. Most state require permits to do so. You also need to find out if there are any restrictions on the size and type of shed you can build.
Step # 2: Deciding on the Type of Shed You Want to Build:
After finding out regarding the permits, the next step is to understand the different types of sheds that you can build. Here is a brief:

Lean to Shed: As the name suggests, a lean to shed attaches to one of the walls in of your lawn or yard. It is not a standalone shed and therefore is perfect for small to medium sized sheds.

Gable Sheds: Gable sheds are the most common sheds being built today. The gable roof is easy to build and is sturdy enough to last for generations. This shed can be scaled to any size; large, medium or small.

Hip-Roof Shed: Hip-roof sheds are majestic but they are usually complicated to build, which is why we only suggest you to build these if you want a large sized shed.
Step # 3: Collecting the Required Materials & Tools
Since we are building a 12×18 lean to shed, the materials you will require include a hammer, a saw, drilling machine, galvanized nails, pressure treated timber, OSB sheeting, asphalt shingles, and the like. Step # 4: Understanding the Measurements of Your 12×18 Lean to Shed
You need to firstly know the measurements of the 12×18 lean to shed. The overall width from the front should be 12 feet at the bottom while from the top should be 12 feet and 7 inches. The length should be 18 feet at the bottom and 18 feet and 1 inch at the top.
Step # 4: Building the Foundation & Flooring
Now that you have the materials and tools, let’s with the building process. The first step of any shed building process is to build the foundation. Make sure you get the measurements right. Your foundation needs to be firm and steady since it will hold the entire weight of the structure. Use pressure treated timber to create rims and joists and attach them together using galvanized nails. This will complete the skeleton of your foundation. For the flooring, use tongue and groove plywood.
Important Tips:

Always build the foundation where you actually want the shed to be. It will be impossible to relocate the shed or the foundation structure later on.

Make sure to clear the area of any clutter or plantation before placing the foundation.
Step # 6: Start Building the Walls
Once the foundation is ready, the next step is to build the walls and install them on the foundation. Use pressure treated timber to build the studs, cripple studs, trimmer studs and headers for the walls. Leave space for a garage door in the front wall. Nail the parts together using galvanized nails.
Important Notes:

Erect the walls on the foundation using temporary brackets. Make sure they fit accurately.

Nail the walls to the foundation using galvanized nails. When accurately installed, remove the temporary brackets.

Use T1-11 siding on the walls to give them a coating of protection from moisture and dry air.
Step # 7: Building the Roof
Now comes the most complicated step of the shed building process, which is building the roof. You simply need to use pressure treated timber to build roof rafters and attach them together using galvanized nails. Once done, use fascia board and OSB sheeting on the roof skeleton.
After the skeleton is ready, install asphalt shingles on them. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to lay the shingles.

We highly recommend using asphalt shingles as they are durable and cost effective. However, you can choose any other type of shingles you want.
Step # 8: Adding Some Finishing Touches:
After the roof is built, the structure of your shed is built. All you need to do now is to add some finishing touches to make the shed usable.

Add a coating of paint or wood stain to protect the timber from moisture or extreme weather.

Insulate the shed if you plan on adding electrical wires and circuits in it.
