Step # 1: Figure Out Legal Shed Building Requirements of Your State/City/Locale
The first step of building a shed is not getting down to cutting the timber or making space for the foundation, but to actually figure out if there are any permits you need to build a shed on your property. Permits come in various forms. You might need permits for building any structure on your property or maybe the permits might pertain to the size of the structure you are building. Whatever the case maybe, you should figure this out before moving further.
Step # 2: Figure Out the Type of Shed You Want to Build:
The second most important step is to know the different types of sheds you can build. Here’s a brief overview:
- Lean-to Sheds: As the name implies, these sheds lean-to a wall of your garden or house. They are not standalone sheds yet are perfect for keeping supplies and tools. If you want an easy to build shed that is small or medium sized then this is your flavor.
- Gable Sheds: Probably the most iconic sheds of all, these sheds have a gable roof which looks stunning and is quite easy to build. Gable sheds can be built in small, medium and large sizes.
- Hip-Roof Sheds: These sheds look spectacular but the hip roof is a bit complicated to build. Therefore, we only recommend these sheds if you want to build a large structure in your garden.

Step # 3: Time to Go Shopping!
Now that we know the type of shed we are building, it’s time to go shopping to get the materials and tools required. You will require some basic tools such as a saw, hammer, galvanized nails, and the like. As for materials, you would need pressure treated timber, tongue and groove plywood, sidings and the like. Step # 4: List Down the Dimensions
Getting to know the dimensions of the shed you are building is obviously the most important step. For this lean-to shed, the overall height would be 9 feet and 6 inches while the width would be 14 feet at the base and 16 feet at the top. We recommend installing a garage door with this and three windows. However, you are free to act as per your requirements.
Step # 5: Start with the Foundation & Flooring
Building a solid foundation for your shed is the most crucial step. Your foundation will hold the entire weight of the shed and therefore it should be extremely sturdy. You will need pressure treated timber to create the skids and joists. Once made, attach them together using galvanized nails. Then, apply tongue and groove plywood flooring on the foundation skeleton.
Important Notes:
- Make sure you build the foundation on the area where you want the shed to be placed. Otherwise, you will have to move foundation later on, which would be a hassle.
- Clean the area of any clutter and plantation.
Step # 6: Build & Set up the Walls on the Foundation:
Now that the foundation is ready, you will start working on the walls. The front wall would be the widest while the side walls will only be half the size. Use pressure treated timber to create the joists and nail them together with galvanized nails. Once you have the skeleton ready, use T1-11 siding to make it secure.
Important Notes:
- Make sure to cut out the area for the doors and windows. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to install the door and windows.
- Erect the walls on the foundation using temporary brackets. If nailed to perfection, remove the brackets.
Step # 7: Building the Roof
Probably the most intimidating task for any woodworker is to build the shed. However, with our PREMIUM PLANS, you can easily build the roofs with the help of our step by step instructions and diagrams.
For now, you will need pressure treated timber to build the roof rafters. The overall width of the roof should be 16 feet while the length should be 14 feet. You will build the rafters and attach them together using galvanized nails.
Once the skeleton is in place, install the fascia and OSB sheeting on it. Then, start placing asphalt on the roof for completion.
Important Notes:
- We recommend using asphalt shingles are they are durable and they look good. However, you can use any type of shingle you want.
Step # 8: Adding Finishing Touches to the Roof
Your shed is almost complete. Now, all that’s left is to add some finishing touches.
- Add a coating of paint or wood stain to the exterior of the shed to keep it safe from moisture and other conditions.
- Use plasterboards for the walls if you want to make separate cabins.
- If you are planning to use electrical wires, make sure the shed is properly insulated.
