How to Build a 16×24 Hip Roof Shed in a Week or Less?

Here is our 10-step guide to build a fancy shed in your yard.

Step # 1: Get your Permits

Following the law is a key to being a responsible citizen and it keeps you out of a lot of trouble. A lot of states require legal permits if you want to construct an additional unit to your house. Get in touch with a legal team and get your shed permit for starters.

Step # 2: Decide the Type & Size

There are 3 basic types of shed all depending upon what purpose they serve and what type of roof they have

1. Lean-to Sheds: Clear from the name, lean to sheds are built against a wall. They are smaller in size and best for storing garden tools or household supplies.

2. Gable Sheds: larger in size than the lean-to sheds, gable sheds serve purposes other than storage depending on the size and can easily be converted into a garage or a gym space.

3. Hip Roof Sheds: the most exquisite type of sheds, hip roof are best suited for large sheds which can be used as a mini office or a pool house or your coveted art space or garage.

Step # 3: Know the Measurements

A 16×24 hip roof shed is huge in size. You need to make sure it is constructed in the right place to not look ugly and has ample garden space around. A 16×24 shed will have a maximum height of 12 feet and 5 ½ inches including the roof. The roof has a width of 25 feet and 7 ½ inches while the walls have height of 7 feet and 6 inches and the width of the shed is 16 feet and 1 inch. With that big of a shed, you will have to install 2 windows on the side wall with a smaller door for general use and a big garage door on the front wall. The doors and windows will be bought separately.

Step # 4: Get the Tools and Materials

Before you start the construction, get the necessary tool. For a basic shed building you will require pressure heated timber, plywood, shingles, rafters, L-joints, Galvanized nails, studs and cripples etc. you will make use of the typical construction tools including hammer, saw, screws etc.

Step # 5: Set the Foundation & Make the Floor

Clear any vegetation from the place you will make your shed.

• The foundation should be built on a smooth even surface.

• Make the foundation using pressure heated timber according to the dimensions.

• Fix the rim and floors joists hammering galvanized nails and using L-joints.

• Once the skid and joist framework is done, nail ¾ inch tongue and groove plywood using galvanized nails to the foundation making the flooring.

Step # 6: Make the Wall Structure

Once the foundation is done, make the wall structure independently using pressure treated timber.

• Start with top and bottom plates, line the king studs of each 7 feet and 6 inches, along the width between the two plates.

• Nail the structure together using galvanized nails. Once the structure for all 4 walls is complete, cut the space for doors and windows on the front wall and the wall on the right.

• Fasten the structure using L-joints, headers and cripple studs. Erect the walls over the foundation using L-joints and nails.

• After the structure is intact, nail T1-11 plywood to the exterior to cover the wall.

Step # 7: Construct the Hip Roof Framework

Now comes the complicated part of the construction.

• Make the hip-roof basic framework by hammering king rafters to a central ridge beam.

• The king studs are tilted at an angle according to the dimensions of your roof.

• Add two common rafters in the center on the either side.

• Assemble the basic roof structure together using galvanized nails.

• Fix this structure on the walls using L-joints and nails.

• Finally nail the remaining jack and hip rafters to the structure.

Step # 8: Cover the Roof

With the hip-roof framework intact on the walls, it is now time to cover the roof.

• Nail ¾ inches plywood as the first layer on the roof framework.

• After the plywood, fix the asphalt shingles on top of the plywood to prevent leakage whilst giving the roof a final look.

Step # 9: Install the Soffits & Fascia Boards

Fascia boards and soffits add detailing to the construction. Install the fascia boards on the walls keeping the flush with the trim. Cover the edges with soffits, giving your shed’s exterior a finalized look.

Step # 10: Adding Some Finishing Touches

• Fix the garage door to the front and add the smaller door and 3×3 windows to the right side following instructions enfolded in the door and window packaging.

• You may choose to paint your shed or coat it with lacquer.
