If you still don’t believe us then here’s a simple 10×14 Gable Shed Plan that you can follow and see the magic happen:
Step # 1: Check the Rules Where You Live
Rules for sheds vary by town. Check your local permit office before you build.
Step # 2: Understand the Different Types of Shed Styles
Once you have checked the local rules, the next step is to understand the different types of sheds you can build on your property. This will give you a clarity as to which shed to choose.
-
Lean to Sheds: Lean to sheds are not standalone sheds instead they lean to one of the walls of your yard. This is the reason they are usually small or medium sized and are perfect for storing supplies or tools.
-
Gable Sheds: Gable sheds are the most popular type of sheds around. The gable roof is easy to build and at the same time is low maintenance, making it perfect for beginners to have.
-
Hip Roof Sheds: Hip roof sheds are probably the most exotic ones but at the same time the hip roof is a bit complicated to build and requires high maintenance. This is the reason why we only recommend investing time and resources in a hip roof shed if you want a large shed and you are ready to maintain it.
Step # 3: Understanding the Dimensions of Your 10×14 Gable Shed
Before you start with the building process, it is important to understand the overall dimensions of your 10×14 gable shed. The width from the front is 10 feet and the width from the side is 14 feet. The overall height of the shed is 12 feet and 5 inches. We recommend installing a garage door and a single window. However, you can swap these with whatever you like.
Step # 4: Getting the Required Tools & Materials
For this shed building project, you will be requiring simple building tools such as a saw, a hammer, drill machines, galvanized nails and the like. As for the materials, we recommend using pressure treated timber, tongue and groove plywood and asphalt shingles. For a complete list of tools and materials, we recommend downloading our 10×14 PREMIUM SHED PLAN.
Step # 5: Start with Building the Foundation
Now that you have all the tools and materials ready, you will start with building a solid foundation for the shed. Make sure you place the foundation on a spot without any clutter or plantation. Also, you need to make sure that this would be the area where you want your shed to be. You wouldn’t want to relocate such a heavy structure later on.
-
Use pressure treated timber to build the rims and joists for the foundation and nail them together using galvanized nails.
-
Next, use tongue and groove plywood for the flooring. Follow instructions in your shed plan for attaching the flooring to the foundation.
Step # 6: Building and Erecting the Walls
Once the foundation has been built, you will start working on the walls.
-
Use pressure treated timber to build the header rims, joists and struts for the walls. Join them together using galvanized nails.
-
Erect the walls on the foundation using temporary brackets. Fix the walls on the foundation with galvanized nails and remove the brackets.
-
Install T1-11 exterior siding on the walls and carefully cut out the area for the door and windows.
-
Install the door and window following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step # 7: Building the Roof
Building the roof is considered the most difficult step when it comes to building a shed. However, if you follow our plan, you will build a roof in less than a week.
-
You will use pressure treated timber to build the roof rafters and attach them together using galvanized nails.
-
Once done, attach the rafters on top of the wall plates with galvanized nails.
-
Now, install OSB sheeting and felt on the roof.
This will complete the skeleton of your roof. Next step is to install the shingles.
Step # 8: Installing the Asphalt Shingles
Installing the asphalt shingles is easy. Simply follow the manufacturer’s instructions and start installing the shingles one by one. You can use any other shingles but we highly recommend going for asphalt shingles as they are cost effective and durable.
Step # 9: Installing the Trims, Fascia Boards & Soffits
With the shingles installed, the next step is to install the trims, fascia boards and soffits.
-
Start with installing the trims as per the instructions in your shed plan. Ensure that the trims sit flush with the shed roof.
-
The next step is to install the fascia boards for the right and left side of the shed. Nail them to the edges of the roof.
-
Install the soffits on the shed eves using galvanized nails.
Step # 10: Adding Some Finishing Touches
Your shed is almost ready. You just need to add the following final touches to make it look more presentable:
-
Use wood stain or paint to treat the exterior of the shed to protect it from moisture and harsh weather and make it look more presentable.
-
Use plasterboard to make cabins or separations in the shed.
-
Make sure to insulate the shed if you plan on installing electrical wires.
That’s it! Your 10×14 Gable Shed is now ready! Still confused about the steps? Download one of our PREMIUM SHED PLANS that will guide you step by step through the process with 3D images, marked diagrams and tips from our professional builders.

What fits in a 10x14 shed
A 10x14 adds 20 sq ft over a 10x12 on a pad only 2 ft longer, enough for a workbench or another run of shelves.
- Yard storage. A push mower, a wheelbarrow, bags of soil and hand tools on the wall, with shelves along the 14 ft wall.
- Workbench corner. Put a bench under the window for light and keep the center aisle clear to the door.
- Wide items. The 78 inch double door opening takes carts and bikes side by side. Measure a riding mower before you count on it.
- Headroom. At 94 1/2 inch sidewalls, standard 72 inch shelving units fit with room above.
What the 10x14 shed plans include

Before you build a 10x14 shed
- Site. Choose flat, firm ground that drains away from the shed. Clear plants and loose soil and build the floor frame where the shed will stay. Our shed foundation guide covers the base.
- Floor. Lay the tongue and groove plywood across the joists and check the frame is square before you nail it off. See the shed floor guide.
- Rafters. Cut one rafter pair, test it on the walls, then use it as the pattern for the rest.
- Permits. A 140 sq ft shed can fall inside or outside local size limits for a permit, and rules change from town to town. Check your local permit office before you buy lumber.
- Roof sheathing. Lay OSB panels with the long side across the rafters and stagger the end joints (APA roof sheathing guide).
