Building and safety

General guidance, not engineering

Our shed plans and guides give general guidance for building a small backyard shed. They are not engineered drawings and have not been reviewed by a licensed engineer or architect for your site. They do not account for local snow loads, wind loads, soil conditions, frost depth or seismic rules. If your project needs stamped drawings or a structural review, hire a licensed professional.

Local codes, permits and rules

Building rules differ from place to place. Before you build, check with your local building department and, if you have one, your homeowners association (HOA). Find out whether you need a permit, how far the shed must sit from property lines and other buildings (setbacks), and whether there are limits on size, height, foundation type or appearance. Our plans do not guarantee that a shed will meet any building code or pass an inspection.

Call 811 before you dig

In the United States, call 811 or use your state’s 811 website a few business days before you dig for footings, piers or anchors. They will arrange for underground utility lines to be marked for free. Outside the US, use your local utility locating service.

Tools and safety

Building a shed involves power tools, ladders, heavy materials and work at height. Read and follow the instructions for every tool you use. Wear eye and hearing protection, gloves and sturdy footwear. Get help lifting walls, rafters and roof panels. Do not work on a roof in wet, icy or windy weather. Electrical, gas or plumbing work should be done by a licensed professional where your local rules require it. You are responsible for judging whether you have the skills to do each step safely.

Materials, quantities and prices

Material lists and cut lists are calculated from the plan design. Actual quantities can differ because of waste, mistakes, lumber quality and the products available where you live. Buy a little extra and check measurements on site before you cut. Any material costs or time estimates we give are examples only. Prices change often and vary by store and region.

Your responsibility

You decide how, where and whether to build. You are responsible for your site, your build, your safety and the safety of anyone helping you. To the fullest extent the law allows, Netholics Media, LLC is not liable for any injury, loss or damage that results from using our plans or guides. See the limitation of liability in our Terms.

Affiliate and endorsement disclosure

We do not currently use affiliate links, and we are not paid to mention any tool, store or brand. When a guide names a product, it is because we think it is useful for the task. If this changes, any affiliate or sponsored link will be clearly marked next to the link, and this page will be updated, as required by the US Federal Trade Commission’s Endorsement Guides.

Testimonials

Testimonials and build photos on the Site come from real customers and are shared with their permission. They reflect each person’s own experience. Your results will depend on your skills, tools, materials, site and the time you put in, and individual results vary. We do not pay for testimonials. If we ever give something in return for a review, we will say so next to it.
