How to Build a 10×16 Gable Shed in a Week or Less?

Here’s all you need to know about shed building

Step # 1: Get the Permit

The first thing to do is consider the law in your state and consulting a district attorney to acquire any permit you may need to build something on your property. For a permit you will definitely need to provide the size and purpose details.

Step # 2: Finalizing the Size and Type

Sheds come in 3 basic types depending on their roof structure

1. Lean-to Sheds: These are constructed against an already erect wall. They are smaller and great if you only need a covered space for your garden supplies and firewood.

2. Gable Sheds: Very popular and easy to make, gable sheds can be built in a lot of different sizes and are independent units. They can be used for multiple purposes.

3. Hip-roof Shed: These are more delicate and complicated and look even better on your property with their exquisite roof design. If you are considering making a really large shed, hip-roof is what you should opt for.

Step # 3: Get the Measurements for Your Sheds

You can’t just randomly began making a shed without having proper measurements for all sides jotted down. A 10×16 shed has a roof spanning over a width of 17 feet and 7 ½ inches. The maximum height is 12 feet and 5 ½ inches. The shed will also have a big shed door and 2 windows installed.

Step # 4: Buy the Supplies, Collect the Tools

Once you know the type, size and measurements of the different parts of your shed, head off to the hardware store to get all the necessary supplies. You will need pressure treated timber, tongue and grove plywood, asphalt shingles, fascia boards, rafter wood, timber for studs, headers and plates along with L-joints and galvanized nails. The basic tools required include a saw, hammer, wrench and drill press or jointer. You will also have to purchase the door and windows for your shed separately.

Step # 5: Sturdy Foundation Building

• Make a sturdy foundation for your shed by fixing skids across the floor and fixing bands and joists over them at an even distance.

• Once you have your skid framework in place, hammer tongue and groove plywood over it to make the flooring.

• Make sure you use galvanized nails to fix all the pieces together.

• Don’t make the foundation in a place other than where you want to build the shed as carrying it from place to place can cause damage.

• Also the ground beneath the foundation must be flat to ensure it’s even.

Step # 6: Erect the Walls

Now build the wall structures separately.

• Each wall will have a height of 7 feet and 1 inch.

• The side walls will have a width of 16 feet 1 inch which will differ on the top to accommodate the slop of the gable roof.

• Use top and bottom plates, wall studs, cripple studs and headers to carve wall structure. Don’t forget to cut space for the door and window.

• Once the structure is done, hammer T1-11 siding panels to the interiors to make the walls and finally attach the walls structures to the foundation.

Step # 7: Making the Roof Structure

This bit is going to be a little hectic and complicated but nothing you can do with intricate details. Begin the roof construction by making trusses for the roof. You can also get ready made trusses from stores. Once you have all the trusses made in identical dimensions, install them once after the other on wall studs using galvanize nails.

Step # 8: Roofing with Asphalt shingles and Plywood

Hammer ¾ inch plywood sheathing as the first layer of roofing on your shed roof. Remember to hammer it against the direction of the studs of trusses. After your plywood layering is done, add another layer of asphalt shingles on your roof to finish it off as a leakage free shed.

Step # 9: Use Fascia Boards on Exterior

Hammer fascia boards across the walls to give your shed an exquisite look. Install the trim on the top plates and rim joists to ensure durability.

Step #10: Adding Some Final Touches

• Refer to the manual that comes with buying doors and windows and use the instructions in there to install the door and windows to your shed. With that done your shed is now completely ready.

• Add a coating of paint on the exterior of the shed to keep it safe from moisture and pest attacks.

• Insulate the shed if you are planning on adding electrical wires inside.
