Here’s the step by step guide on how to build a shed in less than a week.

Step # 1: Take Legal Knowledge about Shed Building Permits

Be a responsible citizen. Know the laws of your state/city/neighborhood before building a shed. Check if there’s any permit you need to acquire to make an addition to your yard. With the legal requirements met, you can now consider the following elements of your shed.

Step # 2: Decide the Size and Type of Shed You Want

Before deciding the size and type, you must gauge the utilization of your shed. Once you have decided how you want the shed to be used, you can then choose from the different types of sheds and pick the size according to the space in your yard and your utility.

  1. Lean-to Sheds: Best suited for storing tools & supplies, the lean to sheds are built against the wall of your garden or porch. These are smaller in size.

  2. Gable Sheds: A small cabin on their own, gable sheds are very popular and can be used to park your bicycle, keep your tools or even adhere to your hobbies away from the hustling of the home. Their sizes can vary to small, large and medium.

Step # 3: Get the Right Materials and Tools

For a simple gable shed, simple construction tools will be required including hammer, saw, drilling machine, galvanized nails. The materials required for shed building include pressure treated timber planks, door, window, asphalt shingles, rafters/trusses etc. For detailed specifications of sizing of material and quantity, we recommend our PREMIUM 10 x 8 gable shed plan.

Step # 4: Identify the Dimensions of Your 10×8 Shed

Before you head on with the construction process, consider the complete dimensions of your 10 x 8 gable shed, including the foundation width and length, the height, the width of the roof etc. For a 10 x 8 shed, the height should be 11 feet and 8 ½ inches. The frontal width should be 8 feet & 1 inch and the side should 10 feet and 2 ¼ inches wide. Additionally, you may install a door and window to the front and back of your shed according to the size that suits your shed best.

Step # 5: Build the Foundation and Lay the Flooring

The first step of building your 10 x 8 shed is laying the foundation. To start off with building the foundation frame, make user of pressure treated timber making joists, bands and skids placing them with an even spacing according to the front and side dimensions. Fix them together using galvanized nails. With the foundation frame intact, line the frame with tongue and groove plywood to complete the flooring.

Tips:

  • It is advisable to make the foundation exactly in the place where you plan to build the shed otherwise, moving the foundation is an added ordeal.

  • Also see that there’s no vegetation or loose soil on the ground and the ground is even to make your shed sturdy.

Step # 6: Construct the Walls Framework

With the foundation and flooring complete, build the framework for surrounding walls using pressure treated timber making the header plates and studs and then fixing them together using galvanized nails. Ensure even spacing. Make use of T1-11 siding on the exterior of your wall frame to give it a more finished look. On the frontal wall, cut space for the door and the window. Assemble the wall structure on the foundation.

Important tips:

Step # 7: Make the Roof Framework with Rafters

With the foundation laid and the walls erect, now comes the hardest part: building the roof of the gable shed. Follow these steps to make your roof.

  1. Start by making rafters for the roof frame. You might as well buy rafters from the hardware store. Fix the rafters together to make trusses. All your trusses must be identical.

  2. Nail the trusses on the wall structure one by one.

Step # 8: Add Shingles to the Roof

  1. Finish the roof framework using plywood and asphalt shingles.

  2. It is advised to follow the manufacturer’s manual on how to install shingles on the roof.

Step # 9: Install the Fascia Boards, Soffits & Trims

  1. With the rafter frame in place and shingles installed, you will now add the trims. Ensure the trims are kept flush with the roof.

  2. After the trims, fix fascia boards to the edges of the roof on the right and left side again using galvanized nails.

  3. Lastly install the soffits

Step # 10: Finishing the Shed

With the roof and walls intact, you can install the door and window following instructions on the handbook of the door/window’s manufacturer. Your 8 x 6 shed is almost ready. You can now make finishing touches to ensure the sturdiness of your shed.

  1. Coat the outer wood of your shed with lacquer to keep your timber from being worn off because of moisture. You may additionally choose to paint your shed giving it a more finessed look

  2. If by any chance you want to make use of electrical wires, cables etc in the shed, insulate it to avoid short circuit.

  3. The shed can be divided into small cabins using plasterboards.
