Follow our simple 10-steps to build a Gable shed in your Yard.
Step # 1: Check the Rules Where You Live
Rules for sheds vary by town. Check your local permit office before you build.
Step # 2: Will it be a Gable shed or a Lean-to Shed?
Now you decide the type of she you will need. There are 3 basic types
-
Lean-to Shed: This one is simpler and smaller and is constructed against an already erected wall in your yard. It can be good to park your bicycle or store the firewood.
-
Gable Shed: This is a more of a cabin with a door and window(s), depending on its size. It can be used for diverse purposes other than just storage.
-
Hip-roof Shed: This is the most exquisite design of shed. It is usually medium or large in its size and is best suited if you need a pool house, an annex or a complete car repair garage.
Step # 3: How Big Will Your Shed Be?
The next step is to jot down the height, width and all the rest of the dimensions for your shed. With a typical 12×16 gable shed, the overall height including the roof beam will be 12 feet and 2 ½ inches. The front width is 16 feet and 1 inch. The front accommodates a door and a 3×3 window and the side wall also accommodates a 3×3 window which needs to be purchased separately.
Step # 4: What Supplies Will You Need?
It is now time to shop. You will need pressure treated timber, ¾ inch plywood sheathing, asphalt shingles, rafter wood, galvanized nails, L-joints etc. The basic tools that will help with the construction include hammer, saw, ladder and brackets etc.
Step # 5: How to Make the Foundation and the Floor?
A skid foundation is best for a gable shed.
-
Start by using pressure treated timber for skids and then place the joists and bands on equal distance over the skid foundation.
-
Nail them together using galvanized nails. Your skid framework should be 12×16.
-
Once you are done with the framework, nail tongue and groove plywood to make the floor.
It is Important that the foundation is made exactly where you plan to build the shed and is not moved around. Also the foundation framework must be built on a solid and even surface.
Step # 6: How to Erect the Walls?
Next, you make the wall structures independently.
-
Start by making the side walls. The height of these walls is 7 feet and 6 inches and their width differs from top and bottom to accommodate the roof beam.
-
Start with the top and bottom plate and then line wall studs along the length. The right side wall will accommodate a window, cut out the space for it and fasten the window framework using headers and cripple studs.
-
Now make the front and back wall. Since the front wall has a door and window space, it might take longer to construct. You will use as much as 30 timber pieces to make the plates, wall studs, cripple studs, and headers on the door and window cuts.
-
Once your wall structures are complete, nail T1-11 siding panels for a finished exterior keeping them flush with the top plate and a little beyond the bottom plate. Nail them to the rim joist of the foundation.
-
You may use temporary brackets while erecting the walls.
Step # 7: How to Make the Roof Framework?
A typical gable roof is constructed by nailing the trusses over the wall studs.
-
Use Rafters to make trusses and hammer those using galvanized nails to the top plate of the walls.
-
Use header to secure them in place. Your roof should lean over the side walls at a total width of 16 feet and 7 inches.
Step # 8: How to Cover the Roof & Make it Leakage Proof?
Once your roof framework is complete, it is now time to cover it. Hammer ¾ inch plywood as the first layer. After the plywood, fix the asphalt shingles on it to make your shed’s roof leakage free. You can also use cedar shingles if your state allows them.
Step # 9: How to improve the Exterior?
Install trims on the edges of your walls to conceal the joints and construction giving your shed a refined look and additionally help with leakage. Install soffits along the trims. Cover the walls with fascia boards to compliment the over-all look of the shed.
Step # 10: How do I install the Door & Windows?
-
Since the doors and windows have to be purchased separately, follow the instructions on the manual that come with the door/windows to fix them on to your shed.
-
Once the doors and windows are installed, your shed is not completely ready. You may additionally paint it or coat it with varnish for a more finished look and to keep it safe from pest attacks.

What fits through a 78 inch double door
- A riding mower or garden tractor, if its widest point clears 78". Measure the deck, not the seat.
- A snowblower or a loaded garden cart, rolled straight in without tipping.
- Long items such as ladders and lumber, which are easier to carry in through a wide opening.
- Inside, 192 sq ft leaves room for a machine in the center and shelving on the side and back walls under the 94 1/2" sidewalls.
How to use the material list at the lumberyard
- Print it and check it off. Tick each line as it goes on the cart or the delivery ticket.
- Pick straight boards. Sight down each stud and joist. Set any slight bow (the crown) facing up on joists and rafters.
- Buy a few spares. Add two or three extra studs for boards that turn out twisted or split.
- Stage the delivery. Floor materials first, then walls, then roof, so nothing sits in the rain for weeks. Wood that stays wet decays faster (USDA Forest Products Laboratory Wood Handbook).
- Read the panel stamps. Check that the OSB carries a span and exposure rating that suits roof sheathing (APA: OSB).
What the plan includes
- 40+ step-by-step instructions, from the skid foundation to the walls, roof, trim, fascia and soffits.
- Full layouts, angles and cuts, plus 3D images of every side and the roof.
- A pro tip for each section, in a PDF emailed right after checkout that reads well on a phone.
Before you build
Pick flat, firm ground with good drainage, clear it, and level the skids on compacted gravel or solid blocks. Measure both diagonals of the floor frame; when they match, it is square. Shed size and placement rules vary, so check your local permit office before you order. Raise walls with a helper and stay off open rafters until the roof is sheathed.
