How to Build a 10×24 Gable Shed in a Week or Less?

Let’s get started with building a shed in your yard.

Step # 1: Permits for Construction

Acquire any permits your state may have made necessary for when you build an additional unit on your property. This can be done by consulting with the district attorney who will help you with all the legalities of building a shed on your property.

Step # 2: Quick & Easy Way to Decide the Size and Type

The size of your shed greatly depends on what purpose your shed will serve. Depending on the roof structure, there are 3 basic types of sheds.

1. Lean-to Sheds: Small and best suited only for storage purpose, lean to sheds are less complicated and are built against an already erected wall.

2. Gable Sheds: With a tilted gable roof, these sheds are a complete cabin with a window and a door and can be used a playhouse for children, outhouse or be converted into a lab/gym/garage

3. Hip-Roof Sheds: A little complicated than the previous two, the hip-roof sheds are suited for areas with extreme temperatures. They are complex structures but very deftly designed.

This 10×24 shed is enormous and constructing it with a gable roof will not only make construction easy but also keep your shed from weather damage with its sliding roof.

Step # 3: The Secret of Measurements

Your shed will not be stable if the height and width of all sides are not measured properly. A typical 10×24 shed will have a height of 10 feet and 3 ¾ inches. The width of the side walls will be 24 feet and 1 inch and will differ at the top and bottom to accommodate the roof slope. The shed will have a big garage door and two windows on the sides, which will have to be purchased separately.

Step # 4: Buying the Finest Supplies and Using the Right Tools

Using fine supplies with the right tools is the key to building a durable and sturdy shed. For any shed, you will need pressure treated timber, plywood planks with ¾ inch thickness, T1-11 siding panels and more timber for studs, rafters and bands. You may as well get rafters and studs separately or altogether buy pre-manufactured trusses for your roof. Don’t forget to buy the door and windows for your shed. Step # 5: A Good Foundation is the Key to a Sturdy Structure

To make your shed strong and longstanding, a good foundation is necessary. Start by cleaning any clutter from where you intend to have the shed and lay a skid foundation on solid ground. Use pressure treated timber for skids, joists and bands and hammer them together with galvanized nails in a 10×24 dimensions. Once your framework is ready, cover it with tongue and groove plywood to make the flooring.

A Few Pointers:

• Make sure to remove any clutter or debris from the area where you are building the foundation.

• Make sure the foundation is placed where you want the shed to be located. Otherwise, you will be relocating the shed later on.

Step # 6: Strong Walls Make a Secure Shed

Make the wall structure independently. First make the front and back wall which are simple and easy to make.

• Start with top and bottom plates made from pressure treated timber and then fix the wall studs along it.

• The walls have a height of 7 feet and 6 inches.

• Next make the side walls in the same pattern, however make cuts for a 9 feet 8 inch door and two 3×3 windows.

• Stabilize the structure after making cuts using cripple joints and headers. Line the wall exterior with T1-11 siding panels.

• Hammer the wall structures on the foundation using galvanized nails and L-joints.

Step # 7: The Trickiest Part – Making the Roof Framework

Of all the complicated shed roofs, gable roof is the simplest yet it requires a lot of extra efforts and time since you have to be very precise with the parts and this requires a lot of heavy lifting.

• Make the trusses for your roof by joining two rafters together using gussets and crosspieces.

• Install the truss one by one on the wall studs using galvanized nails.

• Once all your trusses are nailed fasten them with a header.

Step # 8: A Leakage Free Roof is Important

Next line your roof with the roofing material. We recommend two layers, the first one being ¾ inch plywood hammered horizontally across the roof followed by installation of asphalt shingles to help with leakage. You may use other type of roofing if you like but these are friendly on the pocket and durable.

Step # 9: Final Touch Up: Install the Fascia Boards

The fascia boards give your shed quite an exquisite look.

• Install them along the walls with galvanized nails.

• Install trims and soffits to fasten the entire structure and prevent leakage.

Step # 10: A Garage Door for Your Shed

Lastly, install a garage door and two windows on the right side of the shed. Refer to the instructions that come with the door and windows to learn about their installation.

• Additionally, you could paint/lacquer coat your shed to protect it from moisture.

• If you are planning to use electrical wiring inside the shed, make sure you insult it well.
