Step # 1: Get the Required Permits

Be a responsible citizen and get all the information on the law persistent in your state regarding property extensions. If any permit is needed, get help from a district attorney to help you get a permit for building a shed.

Step # 2: The Type and Size

You can choose the type and size of your shed considering the purpose and the space available in your yard. The 3 basic types of sheds include,

  1. Lean-to Shed: Clear from the name, a lean to shed is constructed against an already erect wall. You could make this shed against your garden wall and use it mainly for storage purpose or parking your bike in the shade.

  2. Gable Shed: A gable shed is a small cabin and can be used for multiple purposes. You can convert it into a playhouse for your kids in summers or use it as your own hide-out.

  3. Hip-Roof Shed: A little more complicated than a gable shed, a hip-roof shed is exquisitely designed and is suited best for medium and large sizes.

Step # 3: Know the Dimensions of your Shed

For a balanced shed, you need to know the proper dimensions. A 10×20 storage shed has a maximum height of 12 feet. The width is 10 feet and 1 inch while the roof spans over a width of 21 feet 7 ½ inches. This shed has a large garage door at the front and a smaller entrance door and 2 windows at the side. The doors and windows have to be bought separately.

Step # 4: Shop for the Materials and Tools

The basic supplies for building a shed include pressure treated timber, studs, rafters, crosspieces, gussets and timber for plates, headers along with roofing and exterior material that includes ¾ plywood sheathing, T1-11 siding panels, fascia boards, asphalt shingles etc. some basic tools you will need to build a shed are various types of saws and hammers with galvanized nails, L-joints etc. Buy the doors and windows separately for your shed according to the dimensions.

Step # 5: Make the Foundation and Flooring

  • Lay the skid foundation for your shed as it not only is easy but also can help relocation of your shed. Fix the skids, joists and bands together using galvanized nails.

  • They should form a 10×20 framework. Make the foundation exactly where you will later build the shed as moving around the foundation can be damaging.

  • Once you have your foundation ready, line it with ¾ inch tongue and groove plywood to make the flooring.

Step # 6: Make the Walls Structure

Next up, make the wall structures on the floor before installing them to the foundation.

  • Attach wall studs to the top and bottom plates made with pressure treated timber.

  • Add headers to fasten the wall structure.

  • Cut out the spaces for Doors and windows on the respective walls and use cripple studs, header plates, etc. to fasten the structure better after the cuts outs.

  • Height of walls is 7 feet and 6 inches. Hammer T1-11 siding to the exterior to make the walls.

  • Eventually, install the wall structures on the foundation using galvanized nails and L-joints.

Step # 7: Build the Roof Structure

Making the roof can be tiring and complicated but once this part is through, your shed can be ready in a day.

  • Make the trusses using rafters, gussets and crosspieces. Hammer the trusses on the wall studs.

  • Make sure all the trusses are identical in size and construction or your gable roof might be compromised. After installing the trusses secure the edges with plates.

Step # 8: Complete the Roofing

After making the roof structure, it is time for you to complete the roofing process. Hammer ¾ inch plywood layer first throughout the roof against the direction of rafters. After covering the entire roof with wood planks, install asphalt shingles.

Step # 9: Add Fascia Boards and Soffits

Fascia and soffits add beauty to the exterior while making it leakage free. Install the soffits on the outer walls and fascia along the trims to cover the naked edges. Also cover the hammering and joints by installing trims above the top and bottom plates, the truss edges and the side walls joints with the roof.

Step # 10: Install the door and windows

  • Lastly, make use of the instructions’ manual that comes with the doors and windows and install them on your shed. Since you will have to buy the doors and windows separately, this plan doesn’t include installation guide.

  • You can also insulate your shed to save from short circuits and paint the exterior to make your shed look pretty. If you don’t want to paint, you may coat the exterior with lacquer. You can always make extra cabins or make partitions in the shed using cardboard sheets.
