How to Build a 10×10 Gable Shed in a Week or Less?

Step # 1: Get to Know the Legalities

Before starting to build the shed, you need to find out about the legal requirements in your state. In most states, you might require a permit in order to construct anything on your property. If so, fulfil the requirements and get onto step 2.

Step # 2: Get to Know the Different Shed Styles

There are various types of sheds that you can build. However, in our opinion, the most durable, easy to build and popular shed styles are the following ones:

• Lean to Shed: As the name implies, these sheds lean to a wall of your garden or lawn. Lean to sheds are not standalone sheds, which is why they are usually recommended in small or medium sizes.
• Gable Sheds: These are the most popular type of sheds you will find around. The gable rood is easy to build and quite durable. In addition, they can be scaled to any size (small, medium or large) since they are standalone sheds.
• Hip-Roof Sheds: Probably the most stylish and exquisite of them all, hip-roof sheds are usually recommended when you want a large shed in your yard. The hip-roof is a bit complex to build, which is why we recommend opting for the hip-roof shed if you want a large shed in your yard.

Step # 3: Understanding the Dimensions of Your 10×10 Gable Shed

Now that you know about the permits and types of sheds to build, let’s go through the dimensions of the 10×10 gable shed. The overall height of this shed would be 11 feet and 8 inches with the roof and width would be 10 feet and 1 inch from the base and 11 feet approximately from the top including the roof. There is a single door and single window that we recommend installing in this shed.

Step # 4: Start Shopping for the Tools & Materials

It’s about time we collect the tools and materials required to build this 10×10 gable shed. You will need simple tools such as hammers, saws, drilling machine, and the like. For the materials, you will need stuff like galvanized nails, pressure treated timber, tongue and groove plywood, and asphalt shingles. Step # 5: Start with Building a Solid Foundation

Now that we have the tools and materials ready for the process, let’s start with building the foundation of the shed. You will use pressure treated timber to build the rims and joists for the foundation and then nail them together using galvanized nails. Once done, use tongue and groove plywood for the flooring.

Important Tips:

• Make sure the area you are setting up the foundation on has no plantation or clutter.
• Always build the foundation where you want the shed to be placed otherwise you will be relocating the structure once it is built. That would definitely be a hassle!

Step # 6: Building & Setting up the Walls

Once the foundation is ready, you need to start building the walls and setting them up.

1. Start with building the side walls. Follow the instructions in your shed plan to accurately follow the dimensions.
2. Use pressure treated timber to build the headers, rims and joists for the walls. Nail them together using galvanized nails.
3. Use temporary brackets to erect the walls on the foundation. Fix the walls on the foundation using galvanized nails and remove the brackets.
4. Use T1-11 siding for the exterior of the walls. Install following manufacturer’s instructions.
5. Carefully cut the area for the window and door. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to install the door and window.

Step # 7: Building the Roof

Now that the walls are set up, you will be building the roof and installing the shingles.

1. Use pressure treated timber to build the roof rafters and nail them together using galvanized nails.
2. Install the gussets on both sides. Each rafter should have a gusset on one side.
3. Nail the rafters one by one on the top plate of the walls.
4. Your roof’s skeleton is now ready. Next is to install the OSB sheeting on it.

Step # 8: Start Adding Shingles to the Roof

1. You will not install the asphalt shingles on the roof skeleton following the manufacturer’s instruction.
2. Note that you can use any type of shingles you like but we highly recommend asphalt shingles as they are durable and cost effective.

Step # 9: Start Installing Trims, Soffits & Fascia Boards

Now that you have installed the shingles, the next step is to install trims, fascia boards and soffits.

1. Follow the instructions in your shed plan to install the trims. You need to make sure that the trims sit flush with the shed roof.
2. Next step is to install the fascia boards on the left and right side of the shed. Then, use galvanized nails to install the boards and nail them to the edges of the roof.
3. Now, install the soffits on the shed eves using 2 inch galvanized nails.

Step # 10: Adding Some Finishing Touches

Your 10×10 Gable Shed is almost ready! You just need to add the following final touches to make it look presentable:

1. Add a coating of paint or wood stain to the exterior to make it look exquisite.
2. Insulate the shed if you plan on using electrical wirings inside.
3. You can use plasterboard to make cabins or partitions in the shed.
