How to Build an 8×6 Gable Shed in a Week or Less?

Step # 1: Inquire about the Legalities

First and the foremost, you need to find out if you require any legal permits to build on your property. Permits vary from state to state. Therefore, you need to contact your local authorities to inquire. In most cases, the size and type of construction you will perform matters.

Step # 2: Understand the Different Types of Sheds You Can Build

There are a couple of shed styles that you can opt for. However, the following three are the most common ones:

• Lean to Shed: As the name implies, a lean to shed will lean against a wall in your garden or yard. These are not standalone sheds, which is why they best suited for small to medium sized sheds.

• Gable Sheds: Gable sheds are the most iconic shed styles around. The gable roof is easy to construct and is also very durable. We highly recommend building this shed type since it can easily be scaled to any size requirements.

• Hip-Roof Shed: The hip roof is definitely the most exquisite among all but a bit complicated to build. This is the reason we recommend investing time in the hip-roof if you want a large shed in your yard.

Step # 3: Collecting the Required Tools & Materials

Now that you know we are building a gable shed, it is time to start collecting the required tools and materials for the job. You will need simple constructions tools such as a saw, hammer, nails, drilling machines and the like. For materials, you will need pressure treated timber, asphalt shingles, single door and window. Step # 4: Understanding the Dimensions of Your 8×6 Shed

Before we start building, you need to need the overall dimensions of the 8×6 gable shed. The overall height of this shed should be 9 feet and 8 inches with the roof while the width should 8 feet from the bottom. We recommend installing a single door and window but you can alter that as per your requirement.

Step # 5: Building the Foundation & Laying the Flooring

You will start with building a solid foundation for the shed. Make sure you build the foundation on a steady and even surface otherwise the entire shed’s integrity will be in jeopardy. Use pressure treated timber to build the joists and skids for the foundation. Attach them together using galvanized nails. Once done, use tongue and groove plywood for flooring.

Important Tips:

• Make sure you build the foundation where you want the shed to be located. You wouldn’t want to relocate such a heavy structure later on.

• Remove all plantation and clutter from the area to avoid the timber from being affected by the moisture.

Step # 6: Building the Walls

Once you have built the foundation, you will build the walls and erect them on the foundation. Use pressure treated timber to build the rims and headers for the walls. Attach them together using galvanized nails.

1. Use temporary brackets to erect the walls on the foundation.

2. Use galvanized nails to fix the walls on the foundation. Remove the temporary brackets if the walls are perfectly fixed.

3. Use T1-11 siding on the exterior of the walls to make it more presentable.

4. Cut out space for the door and window. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to install window and door.

Step # 7: Start Building the Roof

Once the walls are perfectly erect, the next task is to build the roof.

1. Use pressure treated timber to build the roof rafters.

2. Attach the rafters together with galvanized nails.

3. Nail the rafters on the top plate of the walls to build the skeleton of the roof.

Step # 8: Add Shingles to the Roof

1. After you build the skeleton, you will need to add the shingles to it. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to install the shingles.

2. We recommend using asphalt shingles but you can alter them as per your liking.

Step # 9: Installing the Fascia Boards, Soffits & Trims

1. Once the shingles are installed, you will add the trims keeping them flush with the roof.

2. Next step is to install the fascia boards for the right and left side of the shed. Use galvanized nails to fix them to the edges of the roof.

3. Now, you will install soffits using galvanized nails.

Step # 10: Finishing the Shed

Your 8×6 Gable Shed is almost ready! You just need to add some final touches to make it more presentable.

1. You will add a coating of wood stain or paint to the exterior. This will keep the timber safe from moisture and make the shed look presentable.

2. If you are planning to use electrical wires in the shed, make sure to insulate it first.

3. You can use plasterboards to make separate cabins in the shed.
