How to Build a 6×4 Gable Shed in a Week or Less?

Step # 1: Inquire about the Legalities

First and the foremost, you need to find out if there are any legal obligations in your state regarding construction on your premise. Permits could come in different forms. They could be related to the size and type of construction on your property.

Step # 2: Understand the Types of Shed Available

The next step is to understand the different types of sheds that you can build. Following are the three most famous shed types:

• Lean to Sheds: As the name implies, these sheds lean to one of the walls of your garden. They are easy to build but since they are not standalone, they are only good for small or medium size.

• Gable Sheds: When you picture a shed in your mind, the gable shed is what comes to your mind. The Gable roof is the most iconic and easy to build roof. Since these are standalone sheds, they can be scaled to any size.

• Hip-Roof Sheds: The hip roof is definitely exotic but at the same time a bit complicated to build, which is why we only recommend investing time in building a hip-roof shed if you want a large size shed in your yard.

Step # 3: Understanding the Dimensions of Your 6×4 Gable Shed

Now that you have a pretty good idea of the different types of sheds and you have probably cleared the permits, let’s understand the dimensions of this 6×4 gable shed. The overall height of the shed should be 9 feet and 1 inch including the roof and the width from the bottom should be 6 feet and 1 inch. The shed will have a single door and a single window.

Step # 4: Let’s Go Shopping for the Tools & Materials

It’s about time we become builders! And, for that, the first thing we need to do is to buy the tools and materials that we need. You would buy simple stuff such as hammers, galvanized nails, saw, etc. For materials, we recommend using pressure treated timber, tongue and groove plywood, asphalt shingles and the like. Step # 5: Starting with the Foundation & Flooring

Once you have the tools and the material, the first step of the process is to build a solid and reliable foundation. You will be using pressure treated timber to build the joists and rims for the foundation. Once built, use galvanized nails to attach them together. Next, use tongue and groove plywood for the flooring.

A Few Important Tips:

1. Make sure you build the foundation on a surface without any plantation and clutter.

2. Secondly, you need to build the foundation on the location where you want the shed to be placed. You wouldn’t want to move the entire structure later on.

Step # 6: Building the Walls

After the foundation is built, you will build the walls following these steps:

1. Use pressure treated timber to build the headers, joists and rims of the walls.

2. Attach them together using galvanized nails. Make sure to follow the dimensions in your plan.

3. Use T1-11 exterior siding on the walls to make them more presentable and secure.

4. Cut out space for the door and the window. Use manufacturer’s instructions to install the door and window.

5. Use temporary brackets to erect the walls on the foundation. Remove the brackets once the walls are permanently fixed.

Step # 7: Building the Roof

Building the roof might seem like the most difficult task but if you follow our plans, it will be a piece of cake.

1. Start with using pressure treated timber to build the roof rafters.

2. Nail the rafters down on the top plate of the walls. This will be the overall skeleton of your roof.

3. Now, install the OSB sheeting on the skeleton of the roof.

Step # 8: Start Adding Shingles to the Roof:

1. You will now start adding the asphalt shingles to the roof.

2. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install the shingles.

3. You can alternate the asphalt shingles with any type of shingles you want but we highly recommend using them because they are durable and cost effective.

Step # 9: Installing Fascia Boards, Soffits & Trims

Once you have installed the shingles, the next step is to install the fascia boards, and soffits.

1. Start installing the trims as per the instructions in your shed plan. Ensure that the trims sit flush with the shed roof.

2. For the right and left side of the shed, you will need to install the fascia boards. Use galvanized nails to fix them to the edges of the roof.

3. Finally, it is time to install the soffits. You will install these on shed eves using galvanized nails.

Step # 10: Adding Some Finishing Touches

Your 6×4 Gable Shed is almost ready! All you need to do now is to add some final touches to it.

1. Use wood stain or paint to treat the exterior of the shed to make sure it remains safe from moisture and harsh weather.

2. Use plasterboards to make walls and cabins inside the shed.

3. Insulate the shed properly if you want to use electrical wires.
