Step # 1: Find out the Legal Requirements in Your Locale
Before you get started with the building process, you need to find out any legal requirements that your state might have regarding building additional structures on your property. Such permits could be associated with the type and size of shed you want to build.
Step # 2: Decide on the Type of Shed You Want to Build
There are different types of sheds that you can have installed in your garden. However, here are the three most popular types:

Lean to Sheds: As the name implies, these sheds lean to a wall in your garden. They are not standalone sheds rather they become a part of your house structure. They are perfect when built at medium to small size.

Gable Sheds: Gable sheds are the most popular type of sheds around. The gable roof is sturdy and fairly easy to build, making it the ideal choice for DIY shed plans.

Hip-Roof Sheds: Unarguably the most attractive looking sheds! However, the hip-roof is not as easy as a gable roof. Therefore, we only suggest to build this shed if you want a large shed in your garden.
Step # 3: Gather the Materials & Tools
Now that you know about the legal requirements and the types of sheds, let’s get the materials and tools you would need to build a 14×20 lean to shed. You would mainly require tools such as hammers, nails, drilling machine, saw, measuring tape and the like. Step # 4: Get to Know the Dimensions
Now, it’s time to get real! You are about to start building the shed so it is important to understand the dimensions. The overall width from the top would be 22 feet while 20 feet from the bottom. The height should be 9 feet and 6 inches. We recommend installing a garage gate and two windows. However, you are completely free to choose as per your liking.
Step # 5: Start Building the Foundation
The first step of building any shed is to start with the foundation. Make sure you get the dimensions right as any flaw in the foundation could risk the integrity of the entire structure. You will need pressure treated timber to create the joists and skids. Attach them with galvanized nails. Once the foundation skeleton is ready, use tongue and groove plywood for the flooring.
Important Notes:

Build the foundation on the area where you want to place the shed. Otherwise, it will be impossible to shift it later on.

Clear the area of any plantation, moisture or clutter to ensure the foundation sits well on the ground.
Step # 6: Start Building the Walls:
Now that the foundation and flooring is ready, you will start building the walls for your shed. You will need pressure treated timber to build the wall studs, cripple studs, trimmer studs and headers. Once built, Use 3.5 inches galvanized nails to attach them together.
Important Notes:

Cut out the area for the door and windows as per the measurements of both. Make sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions to install the window and the door.

Once the walls are built, erect them on the foundation using temporary brackets. Once they are set, remove the brackets to place them permanently.

Use T1-11 exterior siding on the walls to keep them safe from dry air and moisture.
Step # 7: Start Building the Roof:
Now comes the most complex part of the shed building process – building the roof! For most woodworkers, this is an impossible feat to achieve, but don’t worry we have you covered. You will start building the roof skeleton with pressure treated timber. Build the roof rafters and nail them together using galvanized nails. Once done, place OSB sheeting and fascia to give the roof a nice finish.
Now that the base of the roof is ready, start installing asphalt shingles to complete it.
Step # 8: Adding Some Finishing Touches
Your 14×20 lean to shed is almost ready. Now all that is left is to make it more presentable and secure. Follow these steps to finish the shed to perfection:

You can add a coating of wood stain or paint to the exterior of the shed to keep it safe from moisture and harsh weather conditions.

If you are planning to use electrical wiring in the shed, make sure the shed is properly insulated.
