How to Build a 12×24 Lean to Shed in a Week or Less?

Step # 1: Inquire about the Legal Permits Required

Before you start building the shed, it is important to find out about the permits required to perform any construction on your property. You would also need to find out about the requirements of building different sizes of sheds.

Step # 2: Understanding the Different Types of Sheds You can Build:

Once you fulfil the legalities, the next step is to understand the different types of sheds you can build. Here’s an overview of the 3 most popular shed types:

• Lean to Sheds: Probably the easiest type of sheds to build, lean to sheds lean to a wall in your garden or yard. They are not standalone sheds and are usually small or medium sized.

• Gable Sheds: Probably the most popular type of sheds, gable sheds are exquisite and quite cost effective. The gable roof is easy to build unlike other types of roofs.

• Hip-Roof Sheds: The hip-roof shed looks stunning but at the same time the roof can be a bit complex to build. We only recommend building this type of shed if you require a large shed in your yard.

Step # 3: Understanding the Measurements of the 12×24 Lean to Shed:

Now that you know about the different types of shed styles, let’s get down to measuring this 12×24 lean to shed plan, which we are building. The overall width of the shed from the base should be 12 feet from the front and 24 feet from the sides. We recommend installing a garage door and three top windows, but that is up to your requirements.

Step # 4: Start Collecting the Materials & Tools Required

For this shed, you will require common tools such as a hammer for nailing, saw for cutting the timber, drill machine to drill holes for the nails and the like. Step # 5: Start Building the Foundation

The first step of building the shed is to build a solid foundation. Remember, the foundation will bear the entire weight of your shed and therefore it needs to be steady and rock-solid. You will use pressure treated timber to build the joists and rims for the foundation and nail them together using galvanized. This completes the skeleton of your foundation. Now, use tongue & groove plywood for flooring.

Important Notes:

• Make sure you build the foundation where you intend the shed to be placed. Otherwise, it will be impossible to relocate the shed later on.

• Remove any clutter or plantation from the area before placing the timber on it.

Step # 6: Building the Walls

With the foundation built, the next step is to build the walls. The right and left walls will be a combination of skids and joists while the front wall should have space for the garage door. Use pressure treated timber to build the joists and rims for the walls. Once built, attach them together using galvanized nails.

Important Notes:

• Use temporary brackets to place the walls on the foundation. Once placed, nail them to the foundation using galvanized nails. Remove the brackets once the walls are fixed.

• Use T1-11 siding on the walls to protect them from harsh weather and moisture.

Step # 7: Building the Roof

For most of us, building the roof is the most daunting task when it comes to shed building. But, don’t worry, with our FREE or PREMIUM SHED PLANS, you can achieve this feat in a matter of hours.

You need to create pressure treated timber roof rafters and attach them together using galvanized nails. This completes the skeleton of your roof. The next step is to install the fascia board and OSB sheeting on the skeleton of the roof. Once done, start installing the asphalt shingles to complete the roof.

Important Tips:

• We highly recommend using asphalt shingles but you can use any other shingle type you want.

• Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing the shingles.

Step # 9: Adding Finishing Touches to the Shed:

With the roof completed, your shed is almost ready. All you need to do is to add the following finishing touches to make your shed look more presentable:

• Install T1-11 siding to the exterior of your shed to protect the timber from moisture and harsh weather conditions.

• Add a coating of paint or wood stain to the shed’s exterior.

• If you plan on installing electrical wires, make sure to insulate the shed.
