Step # 1: Get to Know the Legalities in Your Locality

Before starting with the building process, you need to find out if you require any permits in your neighborhood for building or setting up sheds in your yard. You might also want to check if there are any specific requirements for the type and size of shed you are looking forward to build.

Step # 2: The Different Types of Sheds:

The second most important step is to know about the different shed styles that you can build. Here is a short list:

• Lean-to Sheds: Lean-to sheds are easy to build since they lean to a wall in your yard and practically have only 3 walls. Also, since these sheds are usually small to medium sized, their construction doesn’t take much time.

• Gable Sheds: Gable sheds are the most popular type of sheds out there. These are standalone sheds with a gable roof, which gives them the name gable sheds. Gable sheds are easy to build as well with the added benefit that they can be scaled to any size.

• Hip-Roof Sheds: Hip-roof sheds are highly exquisite but also a bit more complicated to build. The ‘hip’ roof is tougher to build than the gable roof.

Step # 3: Let’s Go Shopping for the Tools & Materials

Now that you know the type of shed you are building, it’s time to collect the materials and tools required to build the shed. Step # 4: Note Down the Measurements of Your Shed

The 4×12 lean to shed has a width of 12 feet and 1 inch while the height is 9 feet and 4 inches with a depth of 4 feet and 1 inch. We would suggest using a single door and a single window. However, it is completely up to you when it comes to the door and windows.

Step # 5: Start with the Foundation & Flooring

The most crucial part of building any shed is to build a solid foundation. The foundation holds up the entire weight of the shed for years and therefore it needs to durable and reliable. For this 4×12 lean to shed, we will be using pressure treated timber with galvanized nails to make the joists for the foundation. Once the joists are built and attached together, you will use tongue and groove plywood for the flooring.

Important Pointers:

1. Make sure you build the foundation where you intend the shed to be placed. Otherwise, you will have to move the structure back and forth.

2. Remove any plantation or clutter from the area before placing the foundation.

Step # 6: Working on the Walls:

The next step is to start building the walls for your 4×12 lean to shed. The height of the walls would be 6 feet and 7 ½ inches. You will use pressure treated timber to create the joists for the walls and attach them together with 3.5 inches galvanized nails.

4. Use T1-11 exterior siding to cover the walls and protect them from moisture and dust.

Start with pressure treated timber to build roof rafters. Attach the rafters together using 3.5 inches galvanized nails. Add asphalt shingles to the skeleton after adding a sheathing.

1. We recommend using asphalt shingles because they are cost effective and durable. You can use any other type of shingles you like.

Step # 9: Finishing the Shed:

Now that your shed is almost complete, you need to add some finishing touches to it to make it more presentable. We recommend the following:

1. Use a coating of paint or add wood stain to keep the wood protected from extreme weather conditions.

2. Properly insulate the shed if you are planning on adding electrical wiring.
