How to Build a 10×16 Hip Roof Shed in a Week or Less?

Step # 1: Get Your Permit

If you live in a state that has laws against extensions on your property, consult a legal team and get your permit so you don’t have authorities knocking down a shed after you have constructed it. Be a responsible citizen and follow the law.

Step # 2: The Type & Size You Need

Sheds come in 3 basic types.

  1. Lean-to Sheds: Small and best suited only for storage purpose, lean to sheds are less complicated and are built against an already erected wall.

  2. Gable Sheds: With a tilted gable roof, these sheds are a small cabin with a window and a door and can be used a playhouse for children, outhouse or be converted into a lab/gym/garage

  3. Hip-Roof Sheds: A little complicated than the previous two, the hip-roof sheds are suited for areas with extreme temperatures. They are complex structures but very deftly designed.

Step # 3: Note the Dimensions

It is necessary to know the exact measurements before you set about the construction of your shed. A 10×16 hip roof shed has a height of 12 feet and 8 ¼ inches. The width from the front is 10 feet and 1 inch. The height of the walls will be 7 feet and 6 inches while the hip-shed roof will spread at a width of 16 feet and 11 inches. The shed will also have a door and window installed which you will have to purchase separately.

Step # 4: Shopping the Supplies & Tools

Step # 5: Laying the Foundation, Lining the Floor

The first thing you do when constructing is laying the foundation. For a 10×16 shed, make the skid foundation using pressure heated timber making the rim joists first followed by flooring joists. Fix the joists together using galvanized nails and L-joints. Once the framework is complete, cover the flooring with tongue and groove plywood sheathing with a thickness of ¾ inches to give it a finished and refined look.

Tips:

For a sturdy base, make the foundation on a steady and even surface without any clutter beneath it and ensure you don’t move the foundation framework from once place to other because that can cause damage.

Step # 6: Erecting the Walls Structure

Start by making the walls framework independently.

  • Make the top and bottom plates using pressure treated timber followed by the joists. You can use L-joints to connect the joists together.

  • Remember to cut the space for a door on the right wall according to the size of the door your purchased.

  • Also leave space for 2 windows on the right wall.

  • Once your wall structure is ready you may erect it to the foundation using galvanized nails and L-joints.

  • Cover the wall structure from outside with T1-11 plywood sheaths.

Step # 7: Making the Roof Framework

  • Start the roof structure by making a ridge beam with pressure treated timber.

  • Join common rafters and king rafters to it to give it a basic shape.

  • Assemble the rafters on beam using galvanized nails and then install the framework on the walls using studs, cripples and L-joints.

  • Nail the rest of the rafters along the beam spreading this hip-roof framework to a maximum width of 16 feet and 11 inches.

Step # 8: Covering the Roof

Once the entire roof framework is hammered and fixed on the walls, you can now cover it with ¾ plywood sheaths followed by asphalt shingles. Follow the manual with asphalt shingles to install them on the roof.

Step # 9: Install Fascia to Prevent Leakage

For a more refined look of your shed and its durability, install fascia boards across the walls which helps with leakage and increases the longevity. Cover the lower edges of the roof with soffits along soffits trims to give your shed a finessed look.

Step # 10: Adding Some Finishing Touches

  • As a final step, follow the guide from the window and door manufacturers and install windows and doors on your shed.

  • Add a coating of paint to the exterior of the walls to keep them safe from moisture and pests.
